One of our favourite things about working in weddings is hearing the stories afterwards.
A few weeks after the big day, we'll get a message from a couple telling us everyone is still talking about the wedding.
What's interesting is that they never say, "People loved the flowers," or, "Everyone couldn't stop talking about the table settings."
Instead, they say things like...
"My uncle was the last person I expected to be on the dance floor, and he danced all night."
"My gran is still talking about our first dance."
"Our friends said it was the most fun wedding they've ever been to."
And that's when it hits you.
The things we spend months stressing over before a wedding aren't always the things people remember afterwards.
Don't get us wrong, the details matter. Beautiful flowers, incredible food and a stunning venue all help create an amazing day. But what people take home with them isn't a memory of the napkins or the menu.
It's a feeling.
It's the goosebumps when the ceremony music starts.
It's the roar of laughter during the speeches.
It's everyone singing along to one song with their arms around each other.
It's your grandparents dancing with your friends.
Those are the moments that stay with people.
Having been part of so many weddings across Cape Town and the Western Cape, we've realised those moments rarely happen by accident. They're usually the result of lots of little things coming together at exactly the right time.
Take the ceremony, for example.
Most guests don't notice when the microphones were tested or when the entrance music was quietly queued up in the background. They don't think about where the speakers have been placed or whether someone has checked the volume for the celebrant.
They just remember how emotional it felt when the music started and the bride appeared.
The same goes for cocktail hour.
It might seem like a simple gap between the ceremony and dinner, but it's actually one of our favourite parts of the day. Guests relax, families meet for the first time, friends catch up and everyone begins to settle into the celebration. The right background music fills the space without taking over the conversation. You almost don't notice it's there, but if it wasn't, you'd definitely notice something was missing.
Then come the speeches.
We've seen rooms erupt with laughter because of one perfectly told story, and we've seen not a dry eye in the house after a father speaks about his daughter. Those moments deserve to be heard by everyone. There's nothing worse than seeing guests leaning forward, trying to catch every second because they can't hear properly.
As the evening rolls on, something changes.
Dinner plates disappear. The lights soften. The energy in the room starts to shift.
It's subtle, but you can feel it.
People are ready to celebrate.
Then the dance floor opens.
One couple gets up.
Then another.
Before long, it's full.
Every wedding is different, but it's always amazing to watch complete strangers dancing together by the end of the night. We've seen grandparents requesting dance songs, toddlers stealing the spotlight and even guests who insisted they "don't dance" become the last people to leave the floor.
Those are the photos people frame.
Those are the memories people tell stories about.
