Some DJ briefs make you want to head straight to the record shelves. Mandy’s message ahead of her 50th birthday was one of them.
She opened with:
“Hello DJ :) Excited to literally have a DJ in the house ;-) sorry terrible joke!”
What followed was a thoughtful introduction to her musical world. For her six-hour birthday set at home, I played the majority of her music selection on vinyl, bringing the sounds she loved into the evening through my record collection.
A wonderfully eclectic selection
Mandy’s taste stretched across reggae, dub, punk, folk, alternative rock and hip-hop. Her message mentioned Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, The Clash, Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Cure, Pixies, Pearl Jam and the Fugees, among many others.
Then came electronic music and, in her words, “hundreds of trance parties”.
Her favourite “zone” sat between those worlds: DreadZone, Thievery Corporation, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Nightmares on Wax, The Orb, Massive Attack and Groove Armada. She also named Orbital, Faithless, Chemical Brothers, St Germain and The Prodigy.
As a vinyl collector and cross-genre DJ, this was a brief I could really connect with. Being able to play so much of her selection on records made the gig especially enjoyable.
The flow Mandy wanted
Mandy had a clear idea of how the evening should develop:
“So I thought we could start there - with my favourite zone above chilled ambient dub type beats and then as the evening progresses we move into more dance music as the party gets going. Seeing as though it is a 50th (!!) a good few old dance anthems will make the crowd happy, but from there on I'm happy to leave it to you to take the music where it needs to go on the night.”
She also explained something that really resonated with me:
“So while I hope everyone is in the mood for a boogie and some beats, I don't want to force it. I would prefer awesome, cool tunes supporting great conversation and encourage foottapping than force loud dance music that no-one is dancing to!”
That gave me both direction and freedom: start with the music she loved, support the conversation and let the energy develop naturally.
Bringing her selection to life on vinyl
There is something special about pulling a record from its sleeve, cueing it up and sharing it with a room. For this party, so many of those records connected directly with Mandy’s own musical journey.
Over six hours, the selection had room to breathe. Her brief guided the music, while reading the room helped me decide when to stay with a groove and when to move the energy forward.
For me, that is one of the pleasures of DJing a private celebration. You get to work with someone’s musical memories and favourites, then bring your own knowledge and instincts to how the evening unfolds.

Mandy’s review
“Adrian was the DJ for my 50th birthday party at my home and truly made the evening! The set-up, sound and lighting was smooth and flawless. Most importantly, Adrien really listened to what I had in mind, what music I liked and how I imagined the evening going…add his breadth of musical knowledge and physical skills and the result was an amazing evening of epic tunes and beats that had everyone in a great spirits . To top it off he’s an easygoing friendly person to deal with! highly recommended!”
What means the most to me in that review is that Mandy felt heard. She put real thought into her brief, and I enjoyed turning that into a personal soundtrack for her birthday.
Thank you, Mandy, for welcoming me into your home and trusting me with the music. Six hours behind the turntables, playing the majority of your selection on vinyl, was a pleasure.
